PROGRAMS

  • Books, Grants, Outreach, Special Events

  • The Delaware Heritage Commission publishes books about the history and heritage of Delaware.  The Commission also follows a mandate from the Delaware General Assembly to reprint important out-of-print Delaware books.

  • Provide grants to individuals and groups studying various aspects of First State history and heritage.  The Commission has two grant programs: Purnell Challenge Grants for groups and McKinstry Awards for individuals.

  • The Commission supports the collection of oral histories by providing a listing of over 1,500 Delawareans who have had their memories recorded on tape.  We also host an oral history training seminar each spring.

  • The Commission hosts special events in celebration of Delaware history.   In 2002 we sponsored the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Cooch's Bridge with an encampment, two reenactments, and a lecture program.  Our annual event is The Delaware Book Fair and Authors Day.

  • The Commission provides outreach services to school and groups throughout the state.  Give us a call, we'll be happy to assist you.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Delaware Authors Day to be a part of this
Year's Delaware Book Festival

As a new feature of this year's third annual Book Festival, the Delaware Heritage Office will be holding its Delaware Authors Day at the Delaware Public Archives on Saturday, November 1 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. This event provides an opportunity for Delaware authors to meet the public and sell their books. The authors who have already arranged to attend have published a remarkable array of books on a wide variety of subjects, including wartime reminiscences, genealogy, religion, personal experiences, and childrens' books.

In addition, the Delaware Heritage Office's Delaware Heritage Press books will be on sale. These include books on Delaware Governors, African-American education, Delaware history, the Mason-Dixon Line, Delaware's role in World Wars I and II, Colonial Delaware, Civil War Delaware, and much more. The event will offer something to spark the interest of every member of the family. So come out, meet the authors in person, and have them autograph one of their books for you. The Delaware Public Archives is located on 121 Duke of York Street in Dover. The event is free to the public. For more information, contact Janice Tyner at (302) 744-5077 or e-mail: janice.tyner@state.de.us.
